Shared security perceptions and interests between Japan and the EU

Shared security perceptions and interests between Japan and the EU

In English

Conference by Mr Ken Jimbo, Associate Professor, Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University, Research Fellow, Tokyo Foundation.

The European economic and financial system has been severely affected by the financial crisis. In order to recover from this state of turbulence Europe is placing its faith in the economic boom which characterises the Asia-Pacific region.

This far-off region has now become one of the primary commercial partners of the old continent.

However, it is reasonable to ask whether this growth will continue. Will Europe always be able to count on this support? Are there not some underlying elements of instability in this part of the world?

The prosperity of Europe is now linked to the geopolitical stability of this part of the globe, itself long a source of preoccupation in Japan.

Mr Ken Jimbo, expert on security in the Asia-Pacific region, will present his comments on the situation in this corner of the world. He will also offer some recommendations on ways in which Europe and Japan can contribute to the stability of this region and preserve this environment currently so favourable to economic growth.

After the presentation, Mr Georges Friden, Director of Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, will steer the debate on this issue in a question and answer session.

Ken Jimbo is a young professor at the Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University and also Research Fellow at the Tokyo Foundation and a regular guest of the Canon Institute of Global Studies. In the course of his brief career to date he has specialised in security relations between Japan and the United States, Japanese defence policy, multilateral security in the Asia-Pacific region as well as regionalism in East Asia.
